Night-Sparrow
2020
video installation, 9min
The Otonashi Shrine in Uranouchi, Susaki City, Kochi Prefecture, holds an annual autumn ritual called "Chiriheppo," in which a wedding ceremony is held for the children of the gods. With a verse known for a thousand years, a young boy named Gyoji and a young girl named Itajo appear without touching the ground, land on thrones, and exchange vows in a ceremony. The scene itself seems like a myth. This work is based on stories from the past that were told to me by people I met in Susaki, such as the story of the "Night-Sparrow" in which an old woman lost her child when she was young and the mysterious events that occurred to her afterward, and "Hanatori Odori," a festival that has been celebrated since ancient times. When different echoes overlap, the past and the present blend together, and various times emerge in a multitude of ways. You will find yourself living in the context of modern folklore.
